Team rallies together to raise over £18,000 in memory of close friend

April 7, 2017

A team of supporters from Otley has raised over £18,000 for our charity by cycling from their home in Otley to Paris. The event was completed in honour of their close friend who was airlifted following a motor-sporting accident.

In August 2015 Carl Hughes was racing in a motorcycling event in Lancashire when he was involved in an accident. Due to the severity of the incident we were urgently dispatched to the scene. Carl was airlifted to Royal Preston Hospital but due to complications, he sadly passed away in hospital four days later.

After Carl passed away, his friends and family wanted to do something to honour his memory. Carl was well known for setting his friends ridiculous yet fun challenges so they decided to set one for themselves in his name. Using Carl’s nickname, Drog (after Didier Drogba, apparently for his rubbish football skills!) ‘Le Tour De Drog’ was created. The lads decided they would cycle from their home town Otley to Paris.

Le Tour De Drog (#LTDD) decided that they would start their epic challenge on 4th September 2016. During the lead up to this, and to ensure they raised as much money as possible, lots of fundraising events were held: a Mother’s Day Bake Off, charity events at The Yew Tree, Otley and Weston Lane Social club, Otley, friends ran marathons, colleagues completed a three legged walk, plus lots of very generous people donated on #LTDD JustGiving page.

#LTDD set off on 4th September and reached their destination, 486 miles away in Paris, five days later! They were supported along the way by family and friends and felt overwhelmed by the generosity of support they received from everyone.

Carl’s family and friends said that we provided an invaluable service to Carl and for that they will always be grateful.
